Project Oasis

Team

Students: Celia Armstrong, Julia Huhnh, and Andrew Sheetz

Faculty Advisor: Ada Tremante

Institution: Drexel University

Narrative

Project Oasis is a refugee camp for Syrian women and children who are affected by the abusive and dangerous lifestyle in their current places of refuge; it was established for these people after they fled from their home country of Syria amidst an eleven year civil war. The camp is located right outside of Adana, Turkey, where the refugees will have ample access to resources including food, water, and electricity. Project Oasis is close in proximity to the Adana Syrian Refugee Camp, which establishes a connection to an existing and thriving refugee community. Adana, being a major city within Turkey, provides an opportunity to bridge the gap between the urban city and the rural landscape where these camps are stationed. The camp is in close relation to the Syrian border, so travel time by walking is approximately four to five days. Integrating Project Oasis into a well-established community allows the opportunity to ensure the proper resources and help assist the encampment. The camp will be a place for refugees to rehabilitate their lifestyle within a year’s time, allowing them the chance to progress forward and build a new life.

Narrative

Honduras is in Central America where the primary economy is agriculture. According to the World Bank (2022), Honduras is one of the Western nations’ poorest and most unequal countries. It is about 25.2% of people lived in extreme poverty in 2020. Natural disasters make poverty even worse. Hurricane Eta and Iota in November 2020 affected more than 4.5 million people in Honduras. In addition, with homicide levels in the regions, Honduras becomes one of the worst armed conflicts and criminal groups in Latin America (Nelson-Pollard, 2017). The impact of violence can be felt daily in Central American countries, especially the Northern Triangle area, which is Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras. Violence is a major cause of displacement in that area (Nelson-Pollard, 2017).
