Interior design transcends its foundation of professional and technical skills. We creatively leverage interior design as a tool for social and environmental justice. As educators, we inspire our students to take risks, dare to make mistakes, and burnish their creativity by crossing disciplines and moving beyond the obvious.

How do we, practitioners and educators, challenge preconceptions and propose new interpretations of the built environment?

New York City, where the hyper-local meets the transnational, will be the backdrop for the 2017 IDEC East Region Conference. “Trans” will be explored through papers, presentations, dialogues, and tours. The six vibrant interior design programs of New York City welcome participants from across the East Region.

Presentations at the 2017 IDEC East Regional Conference are welcome on all topics related to the practice and teaching of interior design.

Alex Schweder

Alex Schweder coined the term “Performance Architecture” in 2007 to encapsulate his understanding of architecture that both gives cues for how inhabitants are to behave, and offers itself as a prop for them to form and perform their identities. His work along these lines has been exhibited and collected internationally including the Museum of Modern Art, the Tate Britain, Perform 17, the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the 2014 Venice Architecture Biennale. He is a fellow of the American Academy in Rome and recipient of awards from both the Pollock Krasner and Graham Foundations. He has taught across disciplines at the Southern California Institute of Architecture, UCLA, the Architectural Association in London, the Akademie der Kunst in Vienna, the Parsons School of Design, and Pratt Institute. Recent and upcoming publications include contributions to the books Performing Architecture (Rufford, Juliet, and Filmer, Andrew, Eds.; London: Bloomsbury, 2018), Interiors Beyond Architecture (Schneiderman, Deborah, and Campos, Amy, Eds;Routledge, 2017), and Future Interiors (Hariss, Harriet, and Brooker, Graeme, Eds; 2018).

Explore New York City’s High Line, a trans-formative adaptation of an abandoned, elevated freight rail line as an urban park, and a high-profile aspect of the transformation of New York City from an industrial to a post-industrial city.

Tour will begin at 5:00 pm on the High Line on Tenth Avenue and 23rd Street next to the elevator.

John Kriskiewicz, Tour Guide
Architectural historian John Kriskiewicz holds a degree in architecture from Pratt Institute and is an associate member of the American Institute of Architects, New York Chapter. As an architectural historian, he has designed tours and exhibitions, lectured, and taught courses in architectural and urban planning history. Publications include: the introduction to Manhattan Skyscrapers, exhibition catalog; articles in The New York Times, Seaport Magazine, Architectural Record, Retail Traffic, DOCOMOMO_US_ New York Tri- State’s publication; mod, and Yale School of Architecture’s publication Constructs.

TOUR of Brooklyn Navy Yards, Cost: $20.00

For more than two centuries, the Brooklyn Navy Yard has been a center of industry, innovation, and craft. Once one of America’s premiere naval shipyards, today the Yard is a city-owned industrial park home to 330 manufacturing, technology, and creative businesses, hosting more than 7,000 employees. This special 90-minute walking tour will begin at the Yard’s visitor center, BLDG 92, and offer an introduction to the Yard’s history and current development projects.

On this tour, we’ll take a closer look at the many layers of architectural history visible in the landscape, from Civil War-era shops to innovative LEED-Certified structures, and how these buildings have been adapted for modern industry. Stops will include the Green Manufacturing Center, a former machine shop now home to businesses like New Lab, a technology hardware prototyping space, and Building 77, a 1-million-square-foot World War II-era building that is being transformed into a hub for food and other types of manufacturing.

The tour will begin at 2:30 after lunch at Pratt Institute. Travel accommodations are not provided to the Brooklyn Navy Yard Center at BLDG 92, located at the corner of Carlton Ave and Flushing Ave, where we will meet our guide.
