The School of Interiors is currently poised for significant growth and change as we approach our 50th year as a program. Under the College’s leadership, we are looking ahead to the planning and construction of state-of-the-art facilities, as well as a directive to expand design education through addition of new design programs that will strengthen unprecedented opportunities for growth and advancement of our program towards an outstanding future. In 2022, the School of Interiors will occupy a new building, along with the rest of the College and Landscape Architecture, designed by world-renowned architect and MacArthur Fellow, Jeanne Gang. As the Commonwealth of Kentucky’s premier accredited Interior Design program, UK offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interiors: Planning, Strategy, Design and a two-year Master of Arts in Interior Design. The School of Interiors has a rich academic tradition with an open-minded setting that supports diverse intellectual approaches within a rigorous design curriculum. All faculty at the School of Interiors support the design centered curriculum by applying research, professional, and creative expertise to innovative studio, seminar, and/or lecture course offerings.

As a School of Interiors faculty member, candidates will teach undergraduate studio courses and lecture/seminar courses, engage in School service commitments, and be an active presence in the School as well as the design community by collaborating with campus and community partners. Preferred candidates for this position must hold a terminal degree in interior design or related field. NCIDQ certification or willingness to sit for the exam is preferred. Overview

The Interiors program of the Westphal College at Drexel University invites applications for a full-time teaching faculty position. Under the leadership of newly appointed Westphal Dean, Jason Schupbach, the College seeks to expand its diversity and commitment to social justice and redress of structural racism. Westphal College will lead in shaping new generations of designers, recognizing that interior design plays a pivotal role in the creation of equitable places to live and work.

Responsibilities

Drexel Interiors is a nationally-ranked, CIDA-accredited program supported by a dynamic university with a distinctive vision of community engagement. This position seeks to supplement the program’s strong and balanced faculty with a new hire who will work collaboratively and is committed to teaching the next generation of leaders in the field.

The position will have primary responsibilities teaching undergraduate BS Interior Design and graduate MS Interior Architecture students. The position is a 2-year non-tenure appointment, with the potential for a renewable multi-year contract. The program has a strong track record of supporting faculty through promotion, and this position should be understood as a long-term career opportunity. Administrative ability or experience will be viewed advantageously.

Drexel University is on the quarter term system and the successful candidate will teach three 10-week terms of 2-4 courses each term. Teaching will include a combination of interior design studios, seminars, and lecture courses at both undergraduate and graduate level. The appointment will also involve curriculum development and service to the department/college.

 

Qualifications

Candidates should have a master’s degree or above, and a minimum of 3 years of professional and/or teaching experience. Preference will be given to candidates with a degree and/or professional experience in interior architecture or interior design. Candidates should demonstrate research interests, professional activity, and/or creative work. Ideal candidates will have previous teaching experience, administrative potential, and work well in collaboration.

The position is open to a range of qualifications, but two areas will stand out in our review: 1) preferred candidates will contribute to the diversity of our program and engage issues of culture and identity in their work, and/or 2) preferred candidates will demonstrate engagement with issues of health and well-being, which may include interdisciplinary work with health science disciplines (public health, nursing, etc.).

Candidates should articulate the specific expertise they anticipate contributing to the program. The following represent some qualifications that will be viewed favorably:

  • Demonstrated approach/experience in cross-over industry segments such as health sciences, public health, urbanism, equity design, social sustainability, education, etc.

Organizational Unit Overview
The College of Health and Human Performance has six units: Human Development and Family Science, Health Education and Promotion, Interior Design and Merchandising, Kinesiology, Recreation and Leisure Studies, and a School of Social Work. Job Duties
The Department of Interior Design and Merchandising at East Carolina University has a position open for a Teaching Assistant Professor in Interior Design. This is a fixed-term nine-month appointment, available beginning August 2021. Teaching, and appropriate service to the university, community and profession are expected.

Responsibilities are to teach undergraduate studio and lecture courses in kitchen and bath design, and at least five of the following design specialties: 3-D design, graphic presentation, drafting and presentation software, model construction, residential design, commercial design, design for wellness, hospitality design, interior construction and detailing, building systems, building codes, materials and specifications, human behavior, historic interiors, or professional practice.

Other duties may include:
Provide services to the university and community, participate in the continued development of the undergraduate interior design program, and maintain contacts and activity with professional associations and industries.

The Position

We are looking for a creative and enthusiastic design practitioner who wants to explore the state of the art and design in Interiors and explore its boundaries as they transition to education and explore/direct the future of the interior design profession.

The primary responsibilities of this position will be to balance teaching a design studio with a lecture course in the accredited undergraduate Interior Design Program (BS.ID) each semester with the development of an externally recognized agenda of research, scholarship and/or creative activity. The ideal candidate will combine the development of a robust scholarship agenda with an unwavering passion for teaching students in a professional design curriculum.

The Program

The interior design program is focused on designing spaces for people. We spend over 90% of our time indoors (this was pre-COVID). Interior design education includes an emphasis on health and wellness in interiors. Our students create interior experiences for working, living, and entertainment. To do this, our students must know how space impacts behavior. This means our students understand environmental psychology, materials (EPDs and LCAs), indoor air quality, acoustics, lighting, ergonomics, designing environments that support human activity and other aspects related to interiors.

The focus of the program at VT has been around sustainability and designing for all people. Our curriculum includes projects for varied socio-economic groups and cultures, Universal Design projects, and holistically integrated sustainable design. Students know about and use the Living Building Challenge WELL, and other guidelines for interiors such as LEED ID + C. Interiors change on average every 10 years (much more frequently than new buildings are built). Because of this our students must understand context and resource use and the responsibility of designers to know how to create safe, healthy, long lasting interiors. Beauty is an integral part of this—if it is not beautiful, it will not last.

Central to our approach is a belief that design can improve the way people live, work and play by providing atmospheres that promote these activities and support human beings.

We teach our students the value of research as a basis for interior design solutions. They learn to analyze case studies and precedents, but also how to conduct programmatic research including interviews, surveys, and behavioral mapping. Students also do demographic and cultural research to help them design solutions appropriate to the people and place where the project is located. The learn to use peer-reviewed research pertinent to the project type as opposed to a normative approach based on past projects that can compound mistakes. They learn how to evaluate decisions based on something besides their own opinion.

The Interior Design program has consistently been ranked in the top ten by Design Intelligence since 2002. The Interior Design program is one of four programs housed in the School of Architecture + Design, which includes Architecture, Industrial Design and Landscape
Architecture, and is one of four Schools in the College of Architecture and Urban Studies.
