The School of Interior Architecture within the College of Architecture + Design at the University of Tennessee invites applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE), nine-month, tenure-track faculty position at the rank of assistant professor or associate professor to begin August 1, 2021. Assistant Professor or Associate Professor, Interior Architecture

Job Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will join the Interior Architecture program to become part of a progressive design education environment. The curriculum encourage cross-disciplinary studies and collaborations, and prepares students for professional practice.

The School of Interior Architecture seeks a full-time faculty member to teach at all levels in the undergraduate BSIA program. The position includes teaching, research/creative activity, and service; each category’s workload assignments are commiserate with our institution’s R1 Carnegie Classification. The candidate will contribute to the development of undergraduate minors and a future graduate curriculum. The successful candidate will develop/expand a nationally recognized scholarly program and engage in peer-reviewed scholarship or creative activity.

Position Description:
Fort Hays State University’s Department of Art and Design is seeking applications for a full-time faculty position in Interior Design to begin fall 2021 (9-month contract) with option for renewal. The Department of Art and Design seeks a candidate who is engaged in experimental explorations, creative processes, and practical applications to real world problems. The candidate is expected to provide students with inspiration, leadership, mentorship and technical guidance. We are looking for a candidate who can foster growth in the interior design concentration and has the ability to adapt to new developments in the field and incorporate them into cross-curricular teaching and practice.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • All candidates must possess, at minimum, the terminal degree of MFA in Interior Design; OR must have a minimum of a master’s degree plus 18 credit hours of graduate coursework completed toward the MFA degree; degree must be completed within a timeline to be determined between the chair and the candidate.
  • Evidence (professional portfolio) of creative accomplishments, excellence in writing and interpersonal communication skills in the field of interior design.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MFA in Interior Design or related area;
  • Minimum interior design experience of two years in industry or equivalent experience;
  • Teaching experience (graduate teaching assistantship is acceptable, additional weight assigned to those with experience at CIDA accredited institutions);
  • Experience with the CIDA accreditation process;
  • NCIDQ Certification or NCIDQ-eligible;
  • Evidence of innovative teaching strategies in design studios with focuses including, but not limited to, foundation-level interior design and graphics, corporate workplace projects, furniture design, and community engaged design projects;
  • Demonstrated ability and experience using or teaching industry-standard design software, including but not limited to Autodesk/AutoCAD/Revit, SketchUp and the Adobe Creative Suite;

The Department of Art and Design at Fort Hays State University is excited to present a new state-of-the-art facility and art gallery opening in Fall 2019. Usual Duties

 The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences is one of four departments in the College of Health Sciences, and the Interior Design program is one of four undergraduate programs in the department. The Department invites applications for the position of Program Coordinator of Interior Design at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. The department offers a B.S. or B.A. in Interior Design and holds accreditation from the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) and National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD).

Sam Houston State University has a diverse student population and the Department seeks to recruit and retain a diverse faculty. Duties of the position include teaching undergraduate courses in all levels of the Interior Design program. Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, and the Adobe Creative Suite are a must. Membership in at least one of the following organizations: IDEC, IIDA, ASID, AIA is preferred. In addition to overseeing the program accreditation processes and reviews, the Program Coordinator duties include coordinating program assessment, updating the course catalog, mentoring students, and overseeing program curriculum development. The successful candidate will be responsible for fostering and maintaining industry relationships to help students with networking, internships, and being aware of current trends in interior design. Additional expectations include service to the department, college, and university as well as maintaining scholarly/creative activities.

Time allocation for this position is 75/25, with 75% allotted to teaching undergraduate and graduate students, research, and service; and 25% to managing the Program Coordinator duties which includes the responsibilities, as determined by CIDA, and the needs of the interior design program and department.

The position is a tenure-track, nine-month position with potential for summer employment.

Degree Requirements

 Applicants must have a Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Interior Design or closely related field. At least one degree must be in interior design.

Experience Requirements

 A minimum of three years teaching experience at the post-secondary level and minimum of 3 years professional experience is preferred. Prior leadership experience as well as participation in the CIDA accreditation process and preparation of self-study reports is also desired.

Other Requirements for the Position

 Applicants must also hold NCIDQ certification. A state license and at least one of the following credentials/certifications: LEED-AP, AAHID, WELL-AP, or EDAC is preferred

Duties and Responsibilities:

Teaching – The faculty member will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the following areas: commercial design, universal design, building technologies, and/or other areas of need. They will also actively participate in undergraduate and graduate student advising, curriculum development, development of online course content, and the advising of student organizations.

Research – The candidate will be expected to develop an externally funded, nationally recognized research program that complements existing program strengths in interior architecture and the School of Design and Community Development.

The Department of Construction Management and Interior Design is home to a vibrant and collegial work environment. The Interior Design program consists of six full-time faculty and approximately 130 students who enter through a rigorous selective-entry process. The program has been continuously CIDA accredited since 2007.

Candidates must demonstrate strong ability for teaching undergraduate and graduate lecture and/or studio courses. Develop new courses as required by the Interior Design program. The standard assigned teaching load is 12 semester hours; however, the teaching load for faculty working toward tenure is 9 hours with a research load of 3 hours.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree in interior design, architecture, environmental design, or equivalent curriculum (Ph.D., MFA, or M. ARCH) from an accredited institution conferred on or before August 20, 2021.
  • A record of successful teaching in higher education, as demonstrated by teaching evaluations, reappointment, or other means. Teaching experience may be gained concurrently with degree.
  • Minimum of two years’ relevant professional experience in healthcare design, evidence-based design, human centered design. Experience should be full-time and in a professional, managerial and/or supervisory capacity.
  • Demonstrate teamwork skills as demonstrated by collaborative projects, committee service, or other means.

Position: Interior design educator. Rank: Assistant or Associate Professor. Determination of rank and/or tenure track, or continuing non-tenure track is dependent upon qualifications. Available August 2021.

Qualifications: Master’s degree in interior design or a related field required.  Demonstrated teaching expertise, professional practice experience, and NCIDQ preferred.  Experience with current computer presentation software (AutoCAD, Adobe CS, Revit, SketchUp or other) is desirable. Experience with building and making is desirable.

Responsibilities: Teaching areas are flexible and are determined based upon department need but may include both upper and lower division interior design courses, both lecture and studio based. Teaching responsibilities could include; design foundations and conceptual design, residential and commercial design, making with technology, portfolio design and introductory lecture courses. Non-teaching responsibilities include advising students; assisting with departmental, college, and university activities; and participating in scholarly research and/or creative activities.

Program: Four-year undergraduate program accredited by CIDA with approximately 150 majors, housed in the College of Visual and Performing Arts.  Students pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a concentration in interior design.  Portfolio review selection process is required for admission into upper division courses.  The department consists of nine faculty members that work together in a collegial environment that promotes discovery and learning by doing.

Facilities: Housed in a spacious, light-filled environment, our outstanding facilities and equipment include large studio spaces, computer labs, resource library, work area, and departmental and faculty offices. The design department also houses “maker” spaces equipped with a CNC router, laser cutter, hand held power tools, table saw and 3-D printers.

Institution: Radford University is a comprehensive, coeducational state institution of approximately 9,600 students nestled in the Blueridge Mountains of the New River Valley. Fellowship Duties

Fellows will be given the time and support necessary to develop their creative activities and research, as well as opportunities to grow as teachers. Possible areas of investigation may include, but are not limited to: improving equity and belonging in design practice and pedagogy; housing; resilience; community design; real estate; and building technology. Fellows with an interest in architectural history will also have access to the incredible body of work produced by the architects of the American School, now housed in the OU Libraries American School Archive.

These fellowships pay tribute to the contributions of OU alumni Herb Greene, Violeta Autumn, and Robert L. Through these fellowship opportunities, we aspire to provide the same fertile conditions for growth and development to today’s emerging designers and scholars.

About Herb Greene:

Herb Greene (b. 1929) was drawn to the University of Oklahoma by the promise of studying architecture with Bruce Goff. Greene left Syracuse University destined for Oklahoma in 1948, where he quickly emerged as one of the most talented designers. Goff, however, did not encourage imitation by his students; rather he challenged each student to develop their own unique identity as designers. Greene embraced this philosophy and developed his own radially creative approach to design evident in projects such as his 1961 Prairie House (pictured above). Greene also emerged as a gifted teacher known for being able to coax the very best work out of his own students. After graduating and spending time in practice, Greene returned to OU in 1957 to join the faculty. A generation of inspired architects were fortunate to have Greene as their teacher and mentor.

About Violeta Autumn:

Violeta Autumn nee Eidelman (1930-2012) was born in Peru. Autumn studied architecture with Bruce Goff at the University of Oklahoma, where she embraced an organic approach to design. Autumn practiced architecture and served as a community leader in the San Francisco Bay Area. She partnered with fellow Oklahoma architecture graduate John Marsh Davis to found the award-winning firm Davis-Autumn & Associates. She designed her own home in Sausalito, California, which was featured in Progressive Architecture magazine and Look magazine. Autumn served her local community in many capacities including on the Planning Commission and as a City Councilwoman. She was also an artist and cookbook author.

About Robert L. Wesley:

A native of Memphis, Tennessee, Robert L. Wesley received his Bachelor of Architecture (1962) and Master of Architecture (1963) from the University of Oklahoma, where he was the second Black graduate of the OU architecture program. Wesley joined the Chicago office of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) in 1964 and became its first Black partner in 1984. During his nearly four decades with the Chicago office of SOM, he worked on an impressive range of civic, educational, commercial, master planning and infrastructure projects located in the US and internationally, including Algeria, Australia, Canada, Mexico and the UK. Among his major urban Chicago projects, Wesley worked on included The Art Institute of Chicago, Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago Symphony Hall, Chicago Lyric Opera House, University of Chicago, Northwestern University, Chicago Lakefront Millennium Park, O’Hare International Airport and Collateral Land Planning, Chicago Transit Authority and the Chicago International Entertainment District.
