The Design School in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University invites applications for a full-time tenure-track appointment at the assistant professor rank beginning fall 2021.

The Design School

The Design School is the largest and most comprehensive school for design education, with programs ranked top 20 in the nation. From programs in interior design, landscape architecture and industrial design to architecture and visual communication design, our students master the skills and research techniques needed for their future design professions through innovative, transdisciplinary methods. Our mission is to educate future designers to shape collaborations, synthesize complexity and catalyze transformation for public good. The Design School Interior Design Program is one of the flagship programs in the United States, and features a strong, diverse faculty and growing student enrollment. The Interior Design Program offers an acclaimed, four-year undergraduate program in interior design, accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA), which leads to a Bachelor of Science in Design degree. An online minor in Interior Design History is also offered. The professional graduate program, the Master of Interior Architecture, is also CIDA-accredited and growing in size and impact. It also supports two broader research programs, the Master of Science in Design and the Doctor of Philosophy in Design, Environment and the Arts. The Interior Design Program seeks a colleague who will help further the mission of ASU and The Design School. The successful candidate is expected to actively participate in the Bachelor of Science in Design, Master of Interior Architecture and Master of Science in Design degree programs with faculty, staff and stakeholders. The appointee will be expected to teach both undergraduate and graduate-level studio courses and lecture/seminar courses; mentor graduate student thesis projects; be an active presence in the school and the Phoenix design community; be involved in service to the Program and school; and pursue a research/creative activity agenda in an area related to interior design and/or interior architecture.

The Herberger Institute seeks candidates capable of growing dynamic and innovative degree programs, who can help attract new students and teach courses that support enrollment goals, increase research expenditures through grants and/or other research funding, enhance the diversity of the Institute, and connect and collaborate with designers, artists, and scholars across campus and in the community. Candidates should be dedicated to diversity, equity and inclusion, in their teaching, service and/or research activities. Candidates should also demonstrate and uphold standards of teaching excellence.

Required Qualifications:

  • An accredited bachelor’s degree or international equivalent in interior design, interior architecture, or architecture; and a master’s degree or international equivalent in interior design, interior architecture, architecture or related field;
  • Minimum two years of experience teaching interior design/architecture studios and courses related to the applicant’s area of research and/or creative activities at the university level;
  • Demonstrated potential to develop and sustain a research agenda capable of achieving national or international recognition in an area that leads to an increase in the body of knowledge for interior design and/or interior architecture;
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching, including a minimum of two years of experience teaching university level interior design studio courses;
  • Demonstrated ability to instruct in multiple modalities, including online, in-person and hybrid to both an undergraduate and graduate audience; and
  • Evidence of a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in creative activity and research, teaching and/or service.

Desired Qualifications:

Preference will be given to individuals with;

  • Professional NCIDQ certification in interior design and/or registration/licensure in architecture;
  • Minimum of two years of professional experience in interior design or interior architecture;
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching, research, scholarship and/or creative practice;
  • Demonstrated experience developing skills in collaborative design practice and empathy as a core value;
  • Commitment to exploring the current and future role of interior architecture in environmentally and socially responsible design practices including public engagement;
  • Knowledge of sustainable design materials and practices, and demonstrated experience integrating these into curriculum and pedagogy;
  • Knowledge and experience in retail environments and spatial branding; and
  • Demonstrated ability to instruct in multiple modalities, including online, in-person and hybrid to both an undergraduate and graduate audience
