Dear IDEC Members,
At the annual conference in Montreal, two motions passed at the business meeting charging the IDEC Board of Directors to compose a statement of support for the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) and the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) as organizations that appropriately and effectively oversee interior design education and examination, respectively. The board proposed a resolution and posted it for review and discussion on the IDEC website on April 21, 2008. The board considered all comments and made the necessary refinements to the resolution such that the content reflected the original motions and points made in the blog. You may find the final resolution by clicking on (Final Resolution).
The membership also brought up concerns that the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) was being asked to consider the accreditation of interior architecture programs. We were fortunate enough to have Kim Tanzer, President of ACSA, present to speak on behalf of her organization noting that they did not support this recommendation. Members of IDEC continued to voice concerns that the other Architecture organizations (e.g., AIA, NCARB, AIAS) would not share the same opinion. In an email dated July 9, 2008 to Jeff Beachum (our executive director), Michael Monti, Ph. D. (executive director of ACSA) stated that the issue of interior architecture accreditation was not discussed at NAAB's recent Accreditation Review Conference, and he anticipates that "expanded degrees will not be part of this ARC process."
I will be sending a letter to Marleen Davis (ACSA, President 2008-2009) acknowledging ACSA's stance and will continue to foster an open line of communication with their leaders on any matters of mutual concern.

John Turpin
President 2008-2009
